Entire city of Lahore to be upgraded to 3.2 million-lane, signal-free road

road

Lahore – Our CM Correspondent: The Punjab government, in a meeting chaired by chief minister Shehbaz Sharif, had decided to upgrade the city of Lahore to a mega road that will have 3.2 million lanes.

“We have realised that this is what a large city in a modern state should be like,” said Shehbaz Sharif, speaking to reporters at the chief minister’s office on Mall Road.

It is going to be a daunting endeavour, financially speaking. “As per the instruction of the chief minister, we are going to auction off half the districts of south Punjab in order to pay for this,” said Tauqeer Haider, Punjab finance secretary. “We have already had expressions of interest by the Chinese government on that front.”

The move has attracted the ire of conservationists and environmentalists. “There really is no need to do this,” said Hamid Bhatti of the Lahore Bachao Andolan. “I can’t believe we’re even being asked for an opinion on this!”

But the government is undeterred. “There should be no space for signals in our state. Or trees. Or pedestrians. Or cities,” said Shehbaz Sharif to a cheering crowd. “Only roads. Roads. ROADS!”

Just weeks after the inquiry commission, a judicial probe into allegations of rigging in the May 2013 elections, rejected the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s stance that polls were fraudulent, Imran Khan’s Reham told an Australian television show that in a country where life was fair and there was justice, the PTI chief would have been prime minister long ago, according to local media sources.

Speaking on 60 minutes, aired on Sunday, the PTI chief’s wife Reham, while sitting next to a beaming Imran, told the show’s host that “if life was fair… if there was justice in Pakistan, Imran would have been prime minister a long time ago.”

Imran claimed during the interview that he was the second biggest political target in the country.

“Well, the interior ministry brought out a statement that the prime minister and I were the top-two targets,” said the PTI chief.

The programme went on to show how there was tough security for every time Imran ventured into public and that how when his plane takes off from Peshawar airport, which has come under repeated attacks, it does so in the cover of darkness with no lights on.

Asked that why does he laugh off the threat to his life, Imran says “somehow we have this false sense of security that we will live forever, (but) every one has to die.”

Metro track has sunk under rain water, Punjab govt should now start rowing boats, says PML-Q leader

LAHORE: (Dunya News) – Former Chief Minister Punjab, and Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid (PML-Q) leader, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has on Monday said that the current government has given Pakistan nothing but crises. He said that the Metro track has sunk under rain water. “Punjab government should start rowing boats on the track now”, said the former CM Punjab, reported Dunya News.

Warning the Punjab government about floods, Pervez Elahi said that the government didn’t do anything about the floods last year but should do something this year at least. He said that only one rain has exposed the incompetence of the rulers. “Government’s ‘good governance’ was washed away in the Lei Stream”, taunted Pervez Elahi.

Former CM Punjab said that the farmers faced losses worth billions of rupees last year due to floods but government couldn’t do anything and the situation is quite similar this year as well. He said that the government didn’t seem to be doing anything for the floods. He said that the people are praying to the God only as they have no hopes in these rulers.

PA adopts motion against printing of wrong map of Pakistan

LAHORE: Passing the supplementary budget for fiscal 2014-15 on Friday Punjab Assembly adopted a resolution against the MQM for allegedly having relations with Indian spy agency RAW as well as an adjournment motion against the printing of wrong map of Pakistan in school textbooks.
On Friday, Punjab Assembly session was started 54 minutes late to its scheduled time at 9am under the chair of Speaker Rana Iqbal. The House after adopting some adjournment motions took the government business of four cut motions in the demand of grants of the proposed supplementary budget. Addressing the house against the demand of grant related to the “Loans to municipalities and autonomous bodies” and the “Roads and bridges”, the opposition strongly criticized extra utilization of funds of the government and urged to establish a mechanism for check the proper use of development funds in this regard.
Dr Waseem of JIP demanded the government that it should implement on the resolution already passed by this House about establishing Bahawalpur as a separate province. He also urged the government to constitute a “District Finance Commission” for equal distribution of funds among all 36 districts of the province like National Finance Commission (NFC). Mian Aslam Iqbal of PTI said that there was a need to establish a mechanism in the province to check any proper use of funds from the TMOs. He demanded the government that it should hold audit of all nine towns of the Lahore city.
Waqqas Akhtar Moakal of PML-Q said that constitution of independent companies in the domain of different ministries was in fact a “No-Confidence” on these departments and the concern Ministers from the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. Khadija Umar of PML-Q also criticized the government but the Speaker switched off her mike so she walked out in protest. Qazi Ahmad Saeed of PPP while addressing on the cut motion demanded the government that it should hold Local Bodies (LBs) elections to run the development projects at grass root level in a better way. Dr Murad Rass of PTI also participated in the discussion.
Rejecting the cut motion and the arguments of the opposition, the lady Finance Minister Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha ensured the House that to hold local bodies’ elections was one of the government priorities. Furthermore, she said that her government would also restructure it. After that, the House adopted the cut motion against the budget for Roads & Bridges, Dr Waseem claiming that government provided wrong figures in the supplementary budget as it showed only Rs 9 billion for roads on emergency basis but the real budget was near to Rs 16 billion. He also said that government was spending southern areas’ budget on different projects in Lahore.
When the Speaker switched off his mike, he announcing a token walk out left the House throwing the supplementary budget copy toward the Finance Minister’s desk in protest. Soon after, the Speaker impose “Guillotine” as per Rules of procedure of Punjab Assembly on other two cut motions by the reason of short time to wind up the proceedings within scheduled time and the House passed the Supplementary budget of total volume of Rs 42 billion including all 40 “Demands of Grants” of total volume of Rs 39.92 billion.
Later, as per commitment from the Law Minister with the opposition benches, Mian Aslam Iqbal of PTI tabled a resolution against the MQM which was adopted by the House unanimously but after some amendments proposed by the treasury. This is stated in the resolution that the sitting House expressed concerns over the report of a British institute which is related to MQM.

KARACHI: Seems like the West just can’t stop drawing inspiration from us. Italian designer Donatella Versace is no different. The designer recently unveiled her menswear collection for Spring/Summer 2016 in Milan, surprisingly, much of which was inspired fromshalwar kameez

Versace’s attempts to play with lengths, layers and proportions made a seemingly interesting collection but one that had a strong resemblance to the Pakistani national dress.

Although many took a liking to the ‘new trend’, this is not the first time a designer from the west has drawn inspiration from our traditional dress.

Just last month, fashion bloggers, stylists, and prominent members of the fashion industry were talking about the ‘dress over pants’ trend, which Pakistanis have been sporting for as long as we can remember.

Kendall Jenner — known for wearing outfits revealing her toned body and legs — in a recent public appearance wore the ‘dress over pants’, revealing just her arms and managing to look effortlessly chic.

Similarly, Emma Watson too opted for the trend for the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year as she donned a floor length Christian Dior dress paired with a pair of black pants.

Many western designers have drawn inspiration from Pakistani outfits and used it in their designs, which have graced runways in recent times.

Kalabagh Dam a lifeline for country’s future

LAHORE

Terming the Kalabagh Dam a lifeline for the country’s future, the speakers at a seminar said that the vision of Quaid-e-Azam was to build Kalabagh Dam (Mianwali Hydro Project) and Nara Canal to meet energy requirements through cheep electricity and provide water to the desert of Thar.
“The country’s parliament, in its first budget session in presence of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, had approved the 500MW Mianwali Hydropower Project (Kalabagh Dam) in 1948 with a view to generate power through hydel production.
After the creation of Pakistan, the government under the leadership of Quaid-e-Azam, focused the growth of economy based on agro industry. At that time when the country’s power generation capacity was only 60MW the first budget session approved the construction of KBD,” observed Chairman Sindh Tas Water Council Pakistan Muhammad Suleman Khan at a seminar organized by the Institution of Engineers Pakistan.
Quoting a Wapda report, he stated that the annual electricity generated at Kalabagh Dam would be equivalent to 20 million barrels of oil otherwise needed to produce costly thermal power. This annual import of fuel would require augmentation of transportation infrastructure. It is the additional burden of billion of U.S dollars per annum to the economy.
“IRSA is responsible authority of four of the provinces and federal government. Its Chairman Engr. Raqib Khan (who belongs to Khyber Pk) has written an official letter to the Secretary, Ministry of Water & Power, Government of Pakistan for the water crises in the country. He wrote “IRSA strongly recommended the construction of new water storages of at least 22 MAF capacity on all the feasible sites on war footing basis as agriculture is the back bone of the country’s economy (it is point to note that the capacity of Kalabagh Dam is only 6.1Maf). The new storages will help to improve the diminishing per capita water availability, increase in GDP, control of floods etc., besides availability of cheap environment friendly Hydel Power to overcome the Power crises being faced by the country which is giving a serious setback to the economy.
Chairman Pakistan Engineering Council, Engr Abdul Qadir Shah, who is the brother of Syed Khurshid Shah, senior opposition leader of Pakistan People’s Party and the opposition leader in National Assembly, said at the event of World Water Day that “We have only the storage of 50 days whereas Egypt has 700 days storage in Aswan Dam, China is a big country of huge population has the storage of 500 days whether India has the storage of 120-220 days. We are facing horrible shortage of water. We have to build dams at any cost otherwise after 10-15 years, Pakistan will be the land of deserts.
“Critics argue that if the dam is built, it would turn Sindh into a desert, but the experts are of the opinion that the province would get additional 4.75 million acre feet of water. Punjab would receive additional 2.04 MAF, Balochistan 1.56 MAF and K-P 2.01 MAF.”
The IEP Lahore chapter president Capt (r) Khalid Sajjad, addressing the seminar, said that a general consensus could not be reached as the dam issue has been much politicised. The civil society would have to play a crucial role in creating a larger consensus as new large water reservoirs would benefit every Pakistani, he said.
Engineer Khalid Sajjad said that the Institution of Engineers Pakistan is running a campaign to pave way for the construction of Kalabagh Dam, which is a lifeline for the country’s future. The IEP is holding seminars and discussions with experts to clear any misunderstandings impeding its materialization, he added.
He said that poverty, hunger and darkness would be our fate if we don’t build dams to store water, which is depleting fast. Nation will not forgive people who are opposing Kalabagh Dam for their own interests, he said. Khalid Sajjad stated that only because of government’s silence over KBD, the country is suffering a loss of Rs132 billion annually. This amount could be saved by initiating construction of the dam. He said that another significant aspect connected with the construction is the surety of sufficient amount of electricity at a much cheaper price. “The capacity of the dam is equal to the capacity of 750 medium dams. The country’s dependence on power generated through thermal sources is costing us a lot and we face formidable challenges in both national and international markets.

PML-Q REITERATES FULL SUPPORT TO PAK ARMY

Salim Ahmed

Thursday, June 18, 2015 – Lahore—Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President and former Prime Minister Ch Shujat Hussain and senior central leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Ch Parvez Elahi have reiterated their full support to Pak Army and said that no reduction in honour and prestige of the army will be tolerated.
